How to check whether a crypto exchange is licensed in Latvia

Short answer: type the exchange's name in the search on the home page. If the exchange is in the ESMA MiCA register with the right to serve customers in Latvia, you will see a green tick. We refresh the register data every day (data as of 2026-10-24).c-1

1. Find the exchange's legal entity

The brand and the company are often different. For example, Coinbase is authorised in Europe as Coinbase Luxembourg S.A.c-1 The legal entity name is in the exchange's terms of use or in the website footer.

2. Look it up in the register

Search by brand or legal entity in our list of licensed exchanges. It contains every company authorised for crypto exchange or trading in Latvia (total: 136).c-1 The source is the ESMA MiCA interim register.

3. Check that Latvia and the service you need are in the authorisation

The authorisation is granted in one EU country, for example Malta or Ireland. For the company to work in Latvia, the authorisation must be passported to Latvia.c-2 Check the service too: to buy crypto-assets with euros, the authorisation must include exchange for funds.c-2

Example: Kraken has two companies in the register. Payward Europe Solutions Limited may serve customers in Latvia, while Payward Global Solutions Limited does not have Latvia in its authorisation (data as of 2026-10-24).c-1 More: Kraken licence.

What the results mean

  • Authorised to serve customers in Latvia: the company is in the register, and its authorisation includes Latvia and exchange or trading.
  • Authorised, but not for exchange or trading: the company is in the register and its authorisation includes Latvia, but only for other services, such as custody or transfers.
  • No authorisation for exchange or trading in Latvia: the company has an authorisation in another EU country, but Latvia is not included.
  • Not found in the ESMA MiCA register: the register has no entry with this name. Check the legal entity name.
  • Regulator warning: the company is on ESMA's list of non-compliant entities.

What the register does not tell you

The register says nothing about costs, safety, or whether the company actually accepts new customers. For example, Gemini is still in the register, but it ended its operations in the European Economic Area on 6 April 2026.c-3 More: Gemini licence.
